Peter's original Bandwidth SpeedTest was extremely popular because
it provided information Internet users want to know with an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand
tool. Alas, the old (1999) SpeedTest format just doesn't look as
fresh as it used to, and the old Test lacks some features many Internet users really want . . . Like a way to track the
performance of
their Internet connection and a way to compare their connection's performance
with other types of Internet connections.
So SpeedTest II, better known as MySpeedTest.com, was born.
Following the same design principles and objectives as the original Test,
MySpeedTest.com provides these extra features
in a
very cool, easy-to-use, interactive Web page.
Other SpeedTest advances are more hidden from view. SpeedTest II's
server-side technology uses information acquired from user tests to track
and rate ISP performance and map out physical zip code locations and
connection types for the many ISP POP and head-end locations.
Collecting this information creates a win-win situation for SpeedTest
users and Internet advertisers. Users benefit because this information
helps them find out what ISPs offer better performing Internet connections
in their area. Advertisers and web site operators benefit because this
information pinpoints geographic locations and service capabilities of ISP
head end and POP locations, allowing them to target advertising content to
their user's likely needs and income brackets. And all of this is
accomplished without compromising SpeedTest end-user privacy in any
way.
